Often times it is hard to admit that your marriage is going through difficult times. A lot of times you need to swallow a little pride to face the fact and admit that you need help. Many times it is a bunch of little issues, but sometimes it is one major one that has to be addressed. Such as domestic violence, an affair, or some other relationship altering event.
Why are you here?
Many times, it is the small things that lead to a major issue. Finding the issue and lead you to finding the underlying cause. Often determining the underlying cause is often the first step towards repairing the relationship.
Which are the most important issues?
Trying to solve everything at once, won’t get you very far. The therapist is trying to first find the fundamental underlying issues and then pick a few that are the most important and working on these first. Often times when these few important ones are addressed, a lot of the smaller issues fall to the wayside.
Are you willing to change?
The willingness to apply the principals that were laid out to you is key; without application you are just wasting your time and money. Obviously if you are having problems the old way isn’t working so it is time to try something new.
“Buy In” on both ends is essential. But not only “Buy In” that the change is going happen, but “Buy In” that if the change takes place the other person’s issue will be resolved.
It is good to ask yourself these questions prior; however, if you have a hard time communicating with your spouse, an open discussion of these questions prior, without a mediator has a good probability of leading into an argument. It is best to seek professional help to better your marriage.
